Torsion vs. Extension Springs, and When to Upgrade

Most garage doors use one of two spring systems. Torsion springs mount on a bar above the door and twist to lift it. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch. Torsion springs generally last longer, lift the door more smoothly, and are the standard on most newer doors. Extension springs are common on older homes.
